ANZBACK research
Examples of research led by members of the ANZBACK team are shown below.
OPAL Trial
Opioid analgesics are commonly used for acute low back pain and neck pain but supporting efficacy data are scarce. The OPAL trial aimed to investigate the efficacy and safety of a judicious short course of an opioid analgesic for acute low back pain and neck pain. RESTORE Trial
RESTORE was a randomised, controlled, three-arm, parallel group, phase 3 trial, run in 20 primary care physiotherapy clinics in Australia. The trial assessed cognitive functional therapy with or without movement sensor biofeedback versus usual care for chronic, disabling low back pain. RESOLVE Trial
The RESOLVE Trial aimed to test two interventions targeting the brain to treat chronic low back pain. Participants were allocated to one of two intervention groups, both attending 12 one-hour treatment sessions. Click here to read more about the RESOLVE trial.
SHaPED Trial
The SHaPED trial aimed to improve Emergency Department practices through implementing an evidence-based model of care for acute low back pain and evaluating the effects on healthcare services, patient outcomes, and cost compared with usual emergency care. WalkBack Trial
The WalkBack trial investigated whether an individualised, progressive walking program delivered by a physiotherapist could reduce recurrences of low back pain. The walking and education program was found to reduce the recurrence of low back pain by 28% and reduced care-seeking episodes of low back pain by 43%, compared to the control group.
